This must have been my favorite day tour in Europe so far. Growing up with the sound of music, visiting these places really brings good memories. Perhaps someone who hasn't seen this movie would not be able to relate but for me, it made me smile all day. I'll sing "the hills are alive.. with the sound of music" again and again. This song will remain in my mind for many years to come.

If you only had a day in Salzburg, I would still recommend a visit to this place. You don't have to be a huge history buff to appreciate the deep rich history and beautiful architecture of the fortress. Stay till nightfall and be rewards with the most beautiful night view in all of Salzburg! Don't miss this out when in Salzburg!
Wet and cold weather - estimated temperature negative 2 (not including winds)
Schobrunn Palace
Address: Schönbrunner Schloßstraße 47, 1130 Wien, Austria Opens: 8:30 am – 5:30 pm Website: http://www.schoenbrunn.at/ The former imperial summer residence of Austrian's royalty. The building and gardens were constructed in baroque style. The entire grounds is impressively preserved considering it was opened in year of 1699. The gardens are just gigantic and it would really take you 2 hours to really just walk around the palace and gardens. That doesn't even include stopping to take pictures or buying souvenirs etc. The architecture and old buildings in this city is quire well preserved and you can just tell how much pride the country takes in their rich history. In summary from my first visit here, Austria has one of the warmest people and best hospitality I've encounter in Europe. A stranger would offer to stop by and explain the history of a building to me without my even asking. Being the typical Singaporean, I was suspicious of strangers approaching but after a couple of days, I realize this was really Austrian hospitality! Every waiter/waitress we encountered were friendly and patient with their customers. The hotel staffs were very helpful and glad to give us directions and advice on places to visit. The hot-dog man was just in a cheerful mood even smiling while toasting bread. I was thoroughly impressed with the locals and would return if only for the wonderful hospitality I've experienced. |
